One of the 7 cooperative principles is democratic member control. Electric cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their ratepayers, who actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. Elected representatives (trustees) are elected from among the membership and are accountable to the membership. Cooperatives are working with the General Assembly to update and modernize state laws to strengthen that accountability even more.
